Field Runner
She dashed lightly through the field, her petite figure being held up through the wind as she bounced off her toes. High and sharp blades of grass whipped at her ankles as if tying themselves to her skin to hold her back down. There were two eyes bearing down on her, she could feel the presence of them as they ran up and down her back. She was wearing a yellow floaty dress to match the glowing beams of the sun in the contrast of her light-blue painted toes to match the cloud-free sky. She giggled as she did a skip, hopped in the air and jumped onto the ground in a heap next to a large pile of hay and laid up grinning at the sun.
"She's an absolute nutter, she is," shook his head from the gate where there were eight swinging legs perching on it.
"She's been doing it ever since we got here, God knows why Mum chose to marry into that family - all of them, lunatics I swear," looked back to see her father rubbing a sweeping brush on a cow in the barn behind them, "See what I mean?" he said, pointing at the man as the other three guys turned their heads and laughed.
"I guess it's a pretty nice place though," said - he was always known to look on the best side of things but shrugged it off.
"There is a gig venue around the corner though, I was wondering if we could have our first gig there?" said and nodded vigorously.
"Go on, , we've been practising for months, we need to start getting used to the crowds," agreed but looked unhappy.
"I don't know I just think..." but got cut off by the sight of some hair appearing in front of him.
"Who are you?" she said blankly, poking him in the ribs and making him squirm.
"Umm ," he frowned, rubbing his side where her bony finger had prodded him.
", why is sat on our gate?" she stood in front of now.
"Because wants to sit on the gate now buzz off," said, giving her a glare and then purposely turned his body to face the others, "you were saying ?"
The girl then walked from the far end of the gate - where was sat to the opposite end where the last of the group of guys was sat. He looked at her nervously as she fluttered up onto the gate and squashed up next to him.
"Hi," she smiled as looked at her uncertainly, "I'm and you're gorgeous"
"Uh thanks?" he muttered raising an eyebrow as she shuffled up even more so that her head was now leaning on his arm.
"Just ignore her," mouthed to . It was easier said than done. The three other guys were arguing over whether they were ready or not to play their first gig and was trying his hardest to join in but was whispering and giggling in his ear.
"Come and run with me," she grinned and grabbed his hand, forcing her bony fingers to entwine with his.
"I'm busy," he said, trying to sound forceful but she jumped down off the gate pulling him with her.
", where you going?" folded his arms.
"I don't know!" he shouted making the other three guys laugh as he was dragged away.
"Run," ordered, pulling his hand as he walked beside her while she was pulling him like an excited dog on a lead.
"I can't," he sighed, trying to put her off.
"I said, RUN!" she said, pulling him with so much force that he gave in and ran.
"Not like that, like this! Imagine there's no gravity, just run!" she grinned and giggled as she skipped through the air like she had done before. felt like an idiot in front of his friends but decided to join in anyway. It actually felt pretty good. It was amazing, the feeling of the wind through his hair, the sound of the howling wind hitting his eardrums - it made him feel so alive.
"Weeee!" she screamed and suddenly dived down on to the field floor with a thump and - to his surprise - taking down with her. She had a strong grip on his hand and wouldn't let go.
"Sit here with me. Look at the sky, . It's so blue!" she was smiling so happily up at the sky so he joined in too. It was just the same old sky that he saw everyday.
"Are you on drugs?!" he said suspiciously. She let out a cackle.
"Don't you ever decide to not care about anything and let yourself be totally free?" she said, turning her head that was leant back onto the tall bale of hay that their backs were resting on so that her face was directly next to 's. He was scared to turn his head to look at her because of how close they were.
"Not really?" he smirked. and were right - she was crazy.
"Your friends are looking at you, I know you care what they think about you," she muttered, playing with her hair with her spare hand, "kiss me," she said blankly.
"What?" he said like she'd asked him to do the most bizarre thing he had ever heard.
"Kiss me," she repeated, her grin from ear to ear.
There was a long pause while he frowned, his face staring straight forward. She sighed.
"What's up, haven't you ever kissed a girl? Like this!" she smirked and pushed him to the floor, giving his a deep kiss, "see, it's not hard is it?" she rolled her eyes as if this was perfectly normal and stood up wiping the hay off her dress. She put a hand out for him to take but he shook his head.
"Leave me alone, freak!" he hissed and walked angrily back over to the gate where his friends were sat.
"Hey hey, ! Didn't know you liked the crazy type," elbowed him, winking.
"Why didn't you stop her?" he shouted angrily, his eyebrows knitted together and his arms folded.
"Woah, calm down mate. Was she really that bad?" frowned.
"Yeah, don't take out her kissing skills on us, how were we to know?" laughed. looked up to see her walking down the field with her head hung low, her arms by her sides and she let out a slight sniffle as she marched past the boys on the gate and slammed the door inside.
"She'll be gone for the night now, she'll be up in her bedroom singing to herself again," laughed meanly as he saw her glimpse out of her bedroom window before quickly pulling the curtains shut, "Anyone want a beer? I bought a big pack for tonight," he said as the sky was dimming and night-time was drawing closer.
"Yeah, lets go and get the tent sorted," said, gesturing with his hand for everyone to help with the mess of plastic material and poles that were chucked in a heap on the floor. came back with the pack of beer cans to see the three guys falling over each other to hold up the material when it drooped at either side and joined in to help.
"It keeps falling at that side. , go get your mum to help out!" said before it suddenly stopped drooping and was held firmly in place, "umm, on second thoughts... wait, how is that staying up?!" he frowned as they secured the tent in place. went around to the other side to see standing now in jeans and a t-shirt with her hair tied back.
"Aren't you going to say thank you?" she huffed at him, obviously still angry from earlier.
"Thanks," he genuinely smiled as he looked at her and saw her deep eyes and her beautiful features for the first time.
"You're welcome," she smiled back and turned back round to walk over to the house.
"!" he shouted after her. She turned back round smirking and raised her eyebrows in reply.
"Uhh... do you like beer?" he said, then cursed himself under his breath for asking such a stupid question - what type of girl likes beer?!
"Yeah," she grinned and skipped over to him where he took her hand and lead her into the large tent with the other guys. Seems like she's the type of girl who likes beer, he thought to himself amusingly.
" go away," said sternly.
"It's ok, I let her in," smiled at her and the three guys raised their eyebrows.
"How about a game of spin the can now we've got a girl in the tent then?" smirked and the other guys rolled their eyes, it was obvious that this was his favourite game.
"Go on then," grinned and sat cross legged in a circle, "is there going to be guy on guy kissing?" she said excitedly but the other guys wrinkled their noses.
"NO," they said in unison.
"I'll give you a deal. I've got a bottle of vodka in my room, I'll bring it down here if you do guy on guy kissing," she smirked mischievously but they all shook their heads.
"I said, NO," yelled and she rolled her eyes.
"Fine!" she said as excitingly span the can and it landed on himself.
"Oh, I dare myself to snog ," he said proudly as he scooted over to the opposite side of the circle and gave her a long kiss. didn't know where to look and decided to pick a small hole he found on the tent ceiling. He heard them draw apart so her looked back only to see leaning in and going back in for more.
"Alright , enough," he said making them part leaving in a fit of giggles.
"You're nice," she said sweetly, patting the space between her and for him to sit down.
"So much for spin the can," rolled his eyes, "he only plays it until he gets off with the girl," he frowned and agreed.
After brought his portable TV into the tent and they watched a movie, they decided it was time to go to sleep. They all got changed into their boxers and went inside to get her PJs. She came back with small shorts and a black vest top. had unzipped his sleeping bag all the way so it was made into a large blanket and shuffled over so that could get inside it with him. was next to in his sleeping bag, was after him and on the far end was . As there wasn't much room for all of them in the tent they were all closely packed and was squashed up to the couple. He could feel 's arms slithering around on her back as they cuddled and it made him feel sick. So much for her being a crazy nutter, he thought to himself and turned his back to face snoring and shuddered. He decided to lie on his back looking at the roof of the tent where he could see splashes of rain starting to bounce off it and felt himself drifting to sleep.
He looked down to see himself dressed in a black suit with a bright red tie. Where was he? He looked up to see unfamiliar stone walls and looked in the mirror where his messy hair was neatly groomed.
"We're ready," poked his head round the door; he was also in a suit. He didn't know what he was doing but he followed outside to see a large church with all his relatives sat in one side of the pews and lots of people he didn't know in dresses, hats and suits. was stood at the front with the vicar and he gestured him to go over to him. He quickly walked to the front, was someone getting married? He heard footsteps and appeared at the other side of him.
"Mate, I'm so nervous," he squirmed as the people in the pews stood up and the wedding march started playing. He looked around to see walking down the aisle in a bright white floating dress, her hair curled - she looked like an angel. Then she stood next to and the vicar read out the vows to them both - and were getting married?!
"... or forever hold your peace," he heard the vicar say and felt give him a hard nudge.
"Go on then, save her," said as if it was the obvious thing to do.
felt himself yell "I" and ran over to , wrapping his arms around her tightly as if he wasn't even in control of his body.
Then he awoke.
"I, I, I!" he mumbled as his eyes slowly opened to darkness.
"Shhh!" he felt a hand on his mouth and his eyes focused to see 's face centimetres from his, "you'll wake them all up," she giggled in a whisper and then he realised that she was squashed in his sleeping bag and was on his own. Her leg wrapped around his and she wrapped her arms around his neck, "now go back to sleep, I'm tired."
He was tired too so his eyes closed themselves and he next opened his eyes to the lightness of the tent and 's face. He yawned.
"Hi, I'm and you're gorgeous," she grinned and hugged him tightly. All of the other guys were awake and was acting like nothing had happened the night before and it was perfectly normal that they were sharing a sleeping bag. was drifting back off to sleep when suddenly unzipped the sleeping bag and dragged him up so he was stood up and then pulled him outside the tent.
"RUN!" she screamed and they both skipped and jumped through the field in the fresh morning sun.
